Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando: Biggest Tips, Tricks & Hacks for HHN 2026
If you love horror movies, haunted attractions and theme parks, Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights should be on your bucket list. But if you’re only going for one night, having a plan can make the difference between seeing nearly everything and spending your entire night standing in lines.
Halloween Horror Nights, commonly called HHN, takes over Universal Studios Florida on select nights during the Halloween season. For 2026, the event runs on select nights from August 28 through November 1 and features 10 haunted houses, scare zones, live entertainment, specialty food and several attractions operating throughout the night. HHN is a separately ticketed event, so your normal Universal Studios park ticket does not automatically include admission.
After experiencing just how crazy the crowds and wait times can get, here are some of our biggest Nerdthusiast tips and hacks for getting the most out of Halloween Horror Nights.
1. Buy Your Halloween Horror Nights Tickets in Advance
Don't wait until you arrive in Orlando to decide you're going to HHN.
Popular nights can become extremely busy, particularly Fridays, Saturdays and dates closer to Halloween. If you already know when you're visiting, purchase your HHN admission in advance.
Also remember that Halloween Horror Nights admission and Halloween Horror Nights Express Pass are two different purchases. Buying Express does not replace your event ticket.
For 2026, HHN runs on select nights from August 28 through November 1.
2. Download the Universal Orlando App Before You Go
This might be the easiest tip on the entire list.
Download the Universal Orlando Resort app before arriving.
The app gives you access to:
- Current haunted house wait times
- An interactive park map
- Showtimes
- Mobile food ordering at participating locations
- Your tickets
- Other important park information
During HHN, we were constantly checking the map and wait times to figure out where we should head next. A house that is showing a massive wait earlier in the night could suddenly drop later.
Don't blindly walk from house to house. Use the wait times to dictate part of your night.
3. Study the HHN Map Before You Arrive
Take a few minutes before your trip to actually look at the Halloween Horror Nights map.
The houses are spread throughout Universal Studios Florida, and walking back and forth across the park all night wastes a surprising amount of time.
Know:
- Where each haunted house is located
- Which houses are your top priorities
- Which houses are located close together
- Where the scare zones are
- Where the food and drinks you want to try are located
Once you get inside, try moving through the park in one general direction instead of constantly crisscrossing it.
One good strategy is to target houses farther toward the back of the park early, because many guests naturally start with the attractions closest to the entrance.
4. GET THERE EARLY
This might be our biggest tip.
Do not show up late.
If Halloween Horror Nights officially starts in the evening, that doesn't mean you should be walking toward the entrance at that time.
Be there early and ready.
Universal sometimes begins allowing guests into portions of the event before the official start time, and those first minutes can be some of the most valuable of the entire night.
Those early houses might be a 10- or 20-minute wait when you first arrive and become a 90-minute wait a few hours later.
5. Learn About Stay & Scream
For 2026, this is one of the biggest HHN hacks.
Guests who have valid daytime Universal Studios Florida admission and a Halloween Horror Nights ticket for that same night can take advantage of Stay & Scream.
There is also a separate Scream Early Ticket option for guests who don't have normal daytime admission.
The 2026 system allows eligible guests to get a wristband and access select haunted houses well before the full event officially begins. Some houses can begin admitting Stay & Scream guests as early as 2 p.m. this year.
If you're trying to accomplish all of the houses in a single night, this can give you a huge head start.
6. If You're Only Going One Night, Seriously Consider Express Pass
Yes.
Halloween Horror Nights Express Pass is expensive.
Really expensive.
But if you're traveling to Orlando and only have one night to experience HHN, this is one upgrade we think can actually be worth the money.
The standby lines can get crazy.
Popular houses can reach waits of well over an hour, and during opening weekend in 2026 some headline houses reached posted waits of around two hours or more.
Waiting 60 to 120 minutes for several houses can destroy your entire night.
HHN Express allows you to use the Express queue one time at each participating haunted house, drastically reducing the amount of time you spend waiting.
If you're visiting HHN several nights, you can probably be more patient.
If you've got ONE NIGHT?
I'd personally budget Express into the trip if you can afford it.
7. Don't Waste Your Express Pass When the Standby Line Is Short
Here's another trick.
Just because you have Express doesn't mean you need to immediately use it.
If you enter early and a house has a short standby wait, use the regular line.
Save your Express scan for later in the night when that same house has a massive wait.
This could potentially let you experience one of your favorite houses twice — once through standby when the crowds are lighter and once later using Express.
This strategy can be particularly effective during Stay & Scream.
8. Pick Your Must-Do Houses Before You Arrive
You're probably going to have two or three houses you absolutely cannot miss.
Do those first.
Don't tell yourself:
"We'll get to Stranger Things later."
Because "later" could mean staring at a 120-minute wait.
Make a quick ranking before you arrive:
MUST DO
WOULD LIKE TO DO
BONUS IF WE HAVE TIME
If you don't have Express Pass, this becomes even more important.
9. Don't Forget About the Scare Zones
Halloween Horror Nights isn't simply 10 haunted houses.
Part of what makes HHN so much fun is walking through Universal Studios while the entire park has been transformed.
You'll encounter themed scare zones filled with scare actors, elaborate sets, lighting, fog and plenty of opportunities to get scared while you're simply walking to your next destination.
Don't spend the entire night staring at the wait-time screen on your phone.
Actually enjoy the atmosphere.
Some of our favorite HHN moments happen between the houses.
10. Eat Before the Biggest Crowds Arrive
HHN has tons of specialty food and drinks, and trying the event-exclusive items is part of the experience.
But food lines can become another time killer.
If you're already inside for Stay & Scream, consider eating early. Some HHN food booths can begin operating before the main event crowds arrive.
You don't want to spend 90 minutes waiting for a haunted house and then another 30 minutes waiting for food.
11. Wear Comfortable Shoes
This sounds obvious until you're seven hours into Halloween Horror Nights.
You're going to walk.
A LOT.
You're also going to spend significant time standing in queues.
Wear comfortable sneakers and lightweight clothing. Orlando can still be extremely hot and humid during September and October, even after the sun goes down.
This is not the night to break in a brand-new pair of shoes.
12. Bring a Portable Phone Charger
Between:
- Taking photos
- Recording videos
- Checking wait times
- Using the Universal app
- Looking at the map
- Mobile ordering
- Messaging your group
…your phone battery is going to take a beating.
Bring a small portable charger.
Your phone dying at 10 p.m. when you're relying on it for the park map and wait times is its own horror experience.
13. Prepare for Florida Rain
Halloween Horror Nights operates rain or shine, so check the weather and be prepared. Universal also states that HHN tickets don't come with rain checks simply because of bad weather.
A lightweight poncho can be a lifesaver.
There's another potential advantage: rain can send some guests running for cover or even out of the park.
If you're prepared to deal with it safely, bad weather can sometimes create opportunities to attack the haunted house lines while other guests are hiding from the rain.
14. Don't Waste Your Only HHN Night Riding Attractions
Yes, some regular Universal attractions remain open during Halloween Horror Nights.
But if you've traveled specifically for HHN and only have one night, ask yourself:
Did I come here to ride something I can ride during a normal Universal Studios day — or did I come for Halloween Horror Nights?
Prioritize the haunted houses, scare zones and HHN-exclusive entertainment.
If you've completed everything you wanted, then jump on some rides.
15. Stay Late — REALLY Late
This is another huge strategy.
A lot of people arrive early, go hard for several hours and start leaving as midnight approaches.
That's when things can get interesting.
Halloween Horror Nights can run until 2 a.m., and wait times can begin dropping significantly during the final portion of the night.
If you have the energy, save a major house or two for the end of the night.
And here's a great theme park trick:
You generally don't need to be finished with the attraction by closing time — you need to be in the queue before it closes.
That means jumping into one last monster wait right before the event ends can prevent that queue from eating up the middle of your HHN night.
16. If Possible, Avoid the Busiest Nights
Sometimes your vacation schedule gives you no choice.
But if you have flexibility, visiting on a weekday can make a difference.
Fridays and Saturdays are generally some of the busiest nights, while weekdays earlier in the Halloween season can provide a more manageable experience. Crowds also tend to build as Halloween gets closer.
Our Ideal One-Night Halloween Horror Nights Strategy
If we were visiting Universal Orlando and had only one night at HHN, here's the basic game plan:
Buy tickets ahead of time.
Buy Express Pass if the budget allows it.
Download the Universal Orlando app.
Study the map before arriving.
Use Stay & Scream or arrive as early as possible.
Hit a major house immediately.
Use standby lines while waits are low and save Express for later.
Work around the park instead of constantly walking back and forth.
Eat during an off-peak time.
Use the app to hunt for lower wait times.
Enjoy the scare zones instead of racing through them.
Stay until the very end.
Halloween Horror Nights can be expensive, crowded, exhausting and filled with some absolutely brutal wait times.
And it's still worth it.
There's simply nothing quite like walking through Universal Studios Florida late at night with fog covering the streets, scare actors coming from every direction and some of the biggest horror franchises in the world brought to life around you.
A little planning goes a long way.
Get there early, know what you want to see and embrace the madness.
We'll see you in the fog.
