EMBRACE THE VARIANCE - Poker Thoughts With Frank

Have you ever had a player apologize to you after sucking out on you in a hand and winning a big pot? Of course you have! Anyone that has played a lot of hands of poker has had times when your opponent felt like he needed to justify his play after he came from behind. My response is always “whose money are you playing with?” and when he replies “mine”, I always say “then you can play any way that you want”. I don’t judge players. I just try to adjust to their playing style. Sure, it’s frustrating when you get all your money in as a 90%+ favorite and the other player spikes his miracle card. You want his call! You just don’t want him to hit his card. Well, he is going to hit it about 10% of the time in this case so you have to bite your lip 1 out of 10 times in order to scoop the pot the other 9 out of 10 times. It's a small price to pay in the end. Your job is to get the money in good. The rest is up to the poker gods once the betting action is done.

It’s not easy to do, but in the end you have to “not hate the player” and learn how to “embrace the variance”. Trust me, when I’m playing online poker while on my couch, I get upset when I get drawn out on, but I never chastise the other player. Again, I want him to get his money in bad. Unless he gets his money in drawing dead (0% to win), there are going to be times that I lose the hand and I have to accept that. Your job is to get your money in good. You can’t control what happens after that. There are people that constantly berate other players that play bad and all you are doing is educating them or making them uncomfortable in most cases. Why would you want to do either of those things? Keep them in the game and putting their money in bad and you can reap the benefits.
