Ranking Every Scream Movie (Worst to Best) – Before You See Scream 7

Before you check out the brand new Scream 7, hitting theaters on February 27, 2026, we thought it was the perfect time to look back at the entire franchise and rank every Scream film from worst to best — and explain why each one lands where it does.

From iconic Ghostface reveals to meta commentary that changed horror forever, the Scream series remains one of the most consistent and beloved franchises in horror history.

Here’s our official Nerdthusiast ranking.

6. Scream 3 (2000)

Often considered the weakest entry, Scream 3 leans heavily into Hollywood satire and conspiracy. While it wraps up the original trilogy, the tone feels more like a thriller than true horror, and the kills are far less memorable.

Easter Egg / Fun Fact:
This is the only Scream film without Ghostface using a voice changer app ...Roger L. Jackson’s voice was digitally altered instead due to story changes after Columbine.

5. Scream 4 (2011)

A solid return after an 11-year break, Scream 4 introduced the idea of social media fame and “reboot culture” long before it became mainstream. While some characters don’t leave a huge impact, the third act is one of the franchise’s strongest.

Easter Egg / Fun Fact:
Many of the opening kill scenes were originally meant to be “real” in the film, but were rewritten into fake-out Stab scenes during editing.

4. Scream VI (2023)

Set in New York City, this one brought fresh energy with subway chases, bodega chaos, and one of the most aggressive Ghostfaces ever. It leans more into action-horror, but still delivers tension and strong performances.

Easter Egg / Fun Fact:
This is the first Scream movie ever not set in Woodsboro or California.

3. Scream V (2022)

Also known as “Scream (2022),” this reboot-sequel perfectly balances nostalgia and new blood. It respects the legacy characters while setting up a new generation, and the hospital finale is peak modern slasher chaos.

Easter Egg / Fun Fact:
Dewey’s death scene was intentionally filmed with classic lighting and camera angles from the 1996 original.

2. Scream 2 (1997)

One of the rare horror sequels that’s nearly as good as the original. Bigger kills, higher stakes, and one of the most emotional endings in the franchise.

Easter Egg / Fun Fact:
Early scripts leaked online, forcing the studio to rewrite the entire killer reveal. Also the first time with a solo killer.

1. Scream (1996)

The undisputed GOAT. Wes Craven’s masterpiece reinvented the slasher genre and created one of the most recognizable villains in movie history. Every rule, every twist, every kill still holds up.

Easter Egg / Fun Fact:
Drew Barrymore was marketed as the main star — and dies in the first 10 minutes, shocking audiences worldwide.
