I don’t always watch Rom-Coms, but when I do I make sure it’s the 1989 classic “When Harry Met Sally…” Autumn is quite a delightful season, and I’m not sure about you guys, so this may sound corny to some but to me there’s nothing like watching a seasoned movie in its appropriate setting. In this case, When Harry Met Sally… is the perfect Fall/Winter movie since they both transition into one another so seamlessly. Nothing beats watching this film while bundled up indoors sitting next to the fire pit, drinking hot cocoa.
For those who haven’t seen the film it comes to us from legendary actor/director Rob Reiner, and has remained one of the most beloved rom coms of all time. Starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan has two young adults who develop a friendship over the course of 12 years, doing so they test each other's loyalty as the years go by to see if their friendship becomes more.
Anyone who’s seen a Rom-Com in their life knows how 95% of them usually turn out. When it comes to this film in particular, this is the Rom-Com that other Rom-Coms wish they could end up being. The direction here is terrific and the script - it's quite amazing! The character introductions are really good and the earlier scenes give an idea for Sally's character. What I find this film clever is a documentary-like style with included storylines that fit with what is depicted between Harry and Sally. Billy Crystal is HILARIOUS. His fast talking, wittiness reminds me a lot of Ryan Reynolds. And damn… Meg Ryan is gorgeous and perfectly casted here, I’m actually quite fond of her. Her hair is so funny to see throughout the years. The whole “high maintenance but thinks she’s low maintenance” thing is played so well, especially when ordering food. Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby are solid too. It’s interesting to see how many aspects of this movie are used by more modern rom-coms. For example, these Fisher and Kirby being the friends that end up dating.
This movie is FULL of memorable scenes. The first car ride, when Harry meets Sally, shows off the characters so well. The first dinner at the cafe with the “Sheldon” bit is pure comedy. Same with them walking around the airport. Every phone call scene is done amazingly. The split screen with multiple conversations is a lot of fun. Without a doubt, the best scene in the entire film is Ryan’s iconic moaning inside New York’s famous Katz’s Delicatessen, it is way too hysterical for anyone not to burst out laughing in this moment! The atmosphere of this movie is just great. The New York fall with the beautiful leaves is so pretty and then leads into the holidays. The New Year’s Eve ending is great too. Lastly, the old couples talking about their relationships is such an awesome change of pace and they are all really cute. Such a good addition. This is such a fantastic Rom-Com. Rom-Coms aren’t always my go-to watch as the genre contains mostly cheesy content or being inappropriate. This film is different and is nothing like a modern Rom-Com (in a good way). It’s just too bad they don’t make them like this anymore.
