Discover the Motivations Behind Poker Players: Why Do We Play?

Why Do We Play?

Everyone loves poker, right? At just about any random poker game that you sit down to play in, you will see men and women of all different ages, shapes, sizes, and backgrounds at the table. You can sit at a table and find someone with 40 years of poker experience sitting next to someone who is playing for the very first time. That is the beauty of the game. Anyone can learn it and play it.

There are 4 general categories of players: Loose/Passive, Loose/Aggressive, Tight/Passive and Tight/Aggressive. The Loose/Tight aspect primarily categorizes how many hands a player generally plays. The Passive/Aggressive aspect categorizes how forcefully a player plays or bets. I am not here to discuss those aspects. I’m here to talk about “why” someone plays poker. Well, there are several reasons why someone may play and some players play for more than one reason.

Here are your general reasons why people play poker. Realize that some players may play for more than one reason:

To be social or enjoy leisure time-Some players play mostly for the social aspect of the game. They like hanging out and maybe throwing back a few drinks with friends in home games. They generally know most of the rules of the game and maybe even some basic strategy, but usually don’t study the game much in order to improve their skills. Most of the time, this player is usually too loose and plays every hand thinking I came here to play, not to fold.

Because they like the strategy of the game-One of the coolest things about poker is that it can successfully be played more than one way. Ask a handful of top players about how to play a specific hand and you may get several different answers. Game players love to try to “figure it out” and the game is always evolving. These players generally try to continue to learn and improve their game by studying it.

Because they like the competition-Everyone likes to win and everyone likes money so everyone must like to WIN MONEY. Poker gives you that possibility. It has become very common to see highly successful competitive athletes competing in poker cash games and tournaments.

To give advice/feel knowledgeable-Some players think they always know the game better than everyone else. They are always ready to tell other players what they did wrong in a hand or to tell you what hand someone had after the hand is completed.

To make money-These players are there for the sole purpose of making some dough. Many players may say that they are there to make money, but not all of them actually fit into that category. The true player that is there to make money generally studies the game like the player that is there because of the strategy of the game. Not only do they try to improve their game, but they generally also keep track of their wins and losses so that they can determine if they are actually winning money.
