Top Grossing Video Game Movie Adaptations of All Time: Revealed by Box Office Sales
Now that Super Mario Brothers (2023) is dominating the market, video game movies have been a highly talked about conversation. Before this latest release there was a lot of other gaming movies that made some bucks at the theatre.
Video game movies have had a checkered history, with many failing to impress audiences or critics. However, some have defied the odds and managed to be box office successes.
At the top of the list is the recently released Super Mario Bros. Movie, which raked in $375.6 million worldwide in just five days. Featuring Chris Pratt and Anya-Taylor Joy, the movie has already beaten out its 1993 predecessor with a 7.6/10 rating on IMDb and a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Detective Pikachu, starring Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith, grossed $433.2 million worldwide. Uncharted, the first movie based on the video game series, brought in $401.7 million and starred Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, released in 2010, made $336.4 million with Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley, and Gemma Arterton. Sonic the Hedgehog, featuring Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, and James Marsden, earned $306.8 million.
Angelina Jolie starred in the action-adventure movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, which earned $274.7 million worldwide. The 2016 dystopian action movie Assassins Creed made $240.7 million, while the 2014 action-thriller Need for Speed, featuring Aaron Paul, grossed $203.3 million.
Both Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat were popular video game franchises
that were adapted into movies in the 1990s. Street Fighter, released in
1994, starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as Colonel William F. Guile and
Raul Julia as the villainous General M. Bison. The movie grossed
approximately $99 million at the box office worldwide. Mortal Kombat,
released in 1995, starred Robin Shou as the protagonist Liu Kang and
Linden Ashby as Johnny Cage. The movie grossed approximately $122
million at the box office worldwide. Both movies were box office
successes, but Mortal Kombat was the more successful of the two.
Lastly, Pokémon: The First Movie and The Angry Birds Movie 2 both made the list, earning $172.7 million and $152.8 million, respectively. With the success of these movies, it’s clear that video game adaptations can be a lucrative business.
