A look back at the most idiosyncratic Family
The Addams Family have really become one of the most flagrant families of all time and have remained so for the last few decades. They’re somehow one of the most substantial ones as well and have really connected with people across the globe. Both of Barry Sonnenfield’s films really stuck out to fans of the original comic strips along with audience members in the 90’s, and have since remained cult classics. Sadly we never got a third installment because of the tragic passing of Raul Julia, who brought so much life into Gomez it was hard to imagine anyone else portraying him at the time. Ever since his passing, there have been many adaptations of this family and none of them have managed to capture the magic of what Anjelica Huston, Christina Ricci, Christopher Lloyd and the rest of this amazing cast have since then.
The Addams Family have been cited for their gothic, weird, and macabre lifestyle without ever coming off as cynical towards one another, which makes it all the more embracing. All of this sounds a whole lot like a widely popular filmmaker who’s known for this kind of approach to his film’s and that man is none other than Tim Burton. Surely this man needs no introduction, but for those who don’t know the man he is behind some of the most outcast movies of all time, such as Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Corpse Bride, and Sweeney Todd.
One might think he would be the perfect guy to helm this kinda project, originally in the 90’s they offered him and director Terry Gilliam both the chance to helm the movie before Barry. They both decided to decline said offer as they were not given full creative control so Paramount offered the project to Barry, since he didn’t make his directorial debut yet and wasn’t in the position yet to ask for more creativity. As much of a bummer that may have sounded at the time it still made out for two really faithful adaptations of the family. Fascinating as it sounded after all these years that The Addams Family and Tim Burton seem to go together like bread and butter, for the longest time it sounded only like a fantasy. Now after all these years it seems that this fantasy is finally coming true once and for all.
Tim Burton is finally helming his own version of the iconic family. The series will be primarily focused on daughter Wednesday Addams, who will be portrayed by newest scream queen Jenna Ortega. In this version it is being described as a coming-of-age mystery, during her years as a high school student at a private academy, all while trying to discover her physic powers and solving a murderous killing spree that’s accuring in her familes town. Not too much is being given away with this project, which is good because now it builds up a lot more suspense and intrigue going forward. All we truly know is that it will be more drawn to Wednesday in her adolescence.
The family will be there only as supporting characters sadly, but with Luis Guzman as Gomez, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Mortica, and Christina Ricci jumping back into this world as an undisclosed and original character to the franchise, it seems as if the show is being treated with good care. The single most important thing to remember about the Adams Family is that they are all in fact a healthy, happy, well-adjusted, and loving family. They are comfortable in their own skins, they know who they are and what they are. And they don't care what others think of them. Hopefully Tim Burton brings the same virtuousness to these characters here that we all know them to be. Because if anything, we should all aspire to live like the Adams Family. The series will be streaming on Netflix, Wednesday November 23rd.
