We've all been there: you're watching Ghostbusters and you think, "I wonder what everyone's favorite movie is?" And then it hits you: "What if I ranked all the Ghostbusters movies from best to worst?"
So here we are. Here's how I'd rank the Ghostbusters films.
1. Ghostbusters (1984) - This is my favorite for a lot of reasons, but mostly because it's the first one I saw and it holds a special place in my heart. Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd are both at their best here, and the rest of the cast does great work too. Plus, this movie has some real career-defining moments for each of its stars: Sigourney Weaver as Dana Barrett is absolutely perfect; Ray Parker Jr.'s theme song was an instant classic; Ernie Hudson as Winston Zeddemore is just so funny and charming; and even Rick Moranis as Louis Tully gives his best performance ever (in my opinion).
This movie stands up incredibly well today—it still has all the same magic that drew me in when I was a kid!
2.Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)- This is the long-awaited sequel to Ghostbusters 2, and it does not disappoint. The movie begins with a single mom and her two kids moving into a small town, where they soon discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.
The movie follows a young girl who is trying to find herself when she moves into a new town and new school.
While things seem like they are going well, strange things begin happening in their new house that no one seems able to explain. These unexplained events lead them deeper into a mystery involving their own family history, which leads them closer together as a family while also revealing some secrets that were hidden from them before now.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife is rated PG-13 for supernatural action/some suggestive references; it runs 2 hours 4 minutes long; it was directed by Jason Reitman son of original GB director Ivan Reitman
3.Ghostbusters II (1989)
This sequel was plagued by problems from the start: it was rushed into production after the original movie became so popular that Columbia Pictures didn't want to wait another year to release it. That led to a lot of issues with script writing and set design, as well as some trouble getting Bill Murray on board for another round of ghost busting. It does have some classic parts, like the Statue of Liberty Scene and the Scoleri Brothers. Though it suffers from pacing issues and an over-reliance on special effects at the expense of character development.
4.Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016)
This one was a bit of a letdown for me. While I thought Kate McKinnon did an amazing job as Holtzman, I just didn't enjoy the rest of it. The plot was very slow, and the main villain felt like he barely even had any motivation for being bad (which is probably why they gave him so little screen time). I also didn't feel like they needed four new Ghostbusters instead of just keeping the original four. It would have been much more exciting if they had brought back Dr. Venkman and Dr. Stantz and integrated the new cast with the old ones. The movie had some funny spots, but a reboot isn't what fans wanted.
