The build up to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles summer event series, The Armageddon Game ramps up with TMNT: The Armageddon Game; Opening Moves, issue #2 from IDW Publishing! The creative team, consisting of writer, Tom Waltz, and artist, Fero Pe, continue with their gripping prologue chapter which picks up directly where issue #1 left off. We resume in the perspective of Oroku Saki and his wife Kitsune, as she shows him memories of key characters and important events. The Shredder needs to learn all he can about his emerging rivals in preparation to lead the Turtles against The Rat King's new unlikely team of Baxter Stockman, LeatherKrang and Madame Null!
We spend the first half of the book with the always scheming Baxter Stockman - now the newly appointed mayor of the city. Saki and Kitsune witness the inner workings of the mayor's lab and his obsessive workaholic nature. This hyper-focus causing him to go down shady political paths in order to accomplish his goals. Old Hob sneaks into Stockman's lab, threatening to destroy him and everything he has built. During the confrontation, Old Hob does destroy the lab and comes within an inch of killing him, only deciding to pull back at the last second with a promise to savor his revenge in retribution for the experiments Stockman had performed on him in the past.
Next, the couple visits the mind of the ruthless businesswoman, Madam Null. Waltz gives us a dive into her past on the planet Hirobyl of Dimension Z. Null and her team of mercenaries attempt to hunt down a fugitive witch named Cherubae. Pe does an outstanding job with his choice of panel sizes and splash pages, especially when the dialogue is dialed back during the action scenes. This scene shows Null as a relentless killer during the pursuit, not to mention, as unemphatic as they come choosing to kill one of her own when faced with failure. "She is the wild card", Kitsune states.
The book concludes with Kitsune leaving Saki's side, leaving him alone to face the dangers that are to come as he continues his path towards redemption. On the final page, The Rat King is seen successfully recruiting LeatherKrang in an alley, ending on a close up of the frightening red eyes and eerie smile iconic of The Rat King. To Be Continued...
