HOUSE OF THE DRAGON: INSIDE PREVIEW on HBO

With summer coming to an end I’m sure many people will be searching for some enlightenment for the closing season and so on. Television shows nowadays get an extensive amount of viewers and even fan bases than they did 20 years ago, so for anyone looking for something to really anticipate while we close out for the month then that is HBO’s House of the Dragon. A Prequel set 200 years before the events of the widley critically acclaimed show Game of Thrones and slated to release its first episode on August 21st. Author of the series George R.R. Martin has stated that the show will explore his spin off novel “Fire & Blood'' rather than his “A song of Ice & Fire” series that the 2011-2019 Game of Thrones series was based on.

Very little is being said about the upcoming fantasy drama other than the fact that the series will explore the beginning of the end for the Targaryen dynasty and the power and control they have over the Seven Kingdoms.

Surely for many fans of this beloved series it feels like ages ago we were binge-watching or patiently waiting for a new season to come out as if we were waiting for the second coming. Game of Thrones for some of its flaws (particularly in the last season) was still a spectacle of a show, from the amazing character dynamics, breathtaking visual effects, and astounding production design all showcased this show was truly something special. Ever since the last season felt very short-sightented and incomprehensible to many fans including myself there was no desire from almost any fan or casual viewer for this franchise to carry on. As much as one can say on how the original showrunners annihilated the series in the end or the lore as a whole, personally it seems as if House of the Dragon won’t be repeating any of the same mistakes as before. For me what made the early seasons so captivating was them being able to tackle taboo subjects along with turmoil amongst its characters, the later seasons in particular the last felt as if it lost itself. George R.R Martin who is reported to be more heavily involved this time around, even has gone out and said that this series will not feature fan favorite characters as in the original series. “It’s powerful, it’s visceral, it’s dark, it’s like a Shakespearean tragedy. There’s no Arya — a character everybody’s going to love. They’re all flawed. They’re all human. They do good things. They do bad things. They’re driven by lust for power, jealousy, old wounds — just like human beings. Just like I wrote them.” From the creator himself, its seems as if this prequels ambition is to sink its teeth back into what made the early seasons compelling from the start and not seeking to rush anything out or consulat without its creator this time around.

The formar showrunners of the original series David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are said to have no involvement with the upcoming prequel, instead it will be run by newcomers Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapoochnik. It seems to be in good hands, according to George since he has seen the running 10 episode first season and is pleased with what the showrunners have got worked out so far. For anyone of those worried that this series will just segregate from any unfinished work from George like the previous show since George wasn’t and still isn’t finished writing the books yet, with this story the lore is already complete and ready to go so it would be undoubtedly really hard to get it wrong this time around. All of this news should make us sanguine for the future of this series and I’m certain it will bring back the joy and excitement fans once had with this world and possibly some newcomers as well since this is a prequel setting afterall.
