Upcoming Horror Movies in 2022

We are about halfway through 2022, yet there are still many movies to look forward to, particularly in the horror genre. I’m not sure about everyone else out there but horror is the genre I look forward to the most every year and this year has been filled with some great ones so far. The Black Phone, X, Fresh and Scream have all been bangers and there is still a colossal amount for the remainder of the year to

look into. There are many different ones audiences might be looking forward to, but these are the top 5 that I am personally looking forward to the most.

The next one that I’ll be driving to the theater for is the sci-fi/horror flick Nope which is right around the corner this month, July 22nd directed by Jordan Peele. I have been a humongous fan of Peele ever since his comedy skits on Key & Peele, once I saw his directorial debut the horror/thriller Get Out I knew he had a bright road ahead of him and has since proved himself an excellent writer/director of the genre in his last film Us. The marketing for Nope has been pretty ambiguous while revealing very little, only showcasing a dark swirling cloud that seems to be changing the behavior of animals and humans which begins to wreak havoc around everyone. The only other thing that the marketing has been showing us is that a UFO is also involved, but still being kept in the shadows it seems so I’m sure Peele has something cooking up with that aspect of the film that we’re not used to seeing in other Sci-fi flicks. Definitely make sure to check this out in IMAX since it’s also the first film of his being shot in 70mm.

Probably the most bombastic concept to be coming out this year is Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. With a pending release date still in the air this has got to be the most absurd and bewildering one I am looking forward to. Described as a live action horror adaptation of the ionic character Winnie the Pooh, we follow him and Piglet as they go on a rampage after Christopher Robin abandons them. This could possibly be the worst one to come out since the trailer looks as if it’s made by first time film students or it could be one of the funniest and immoderate concepts to be put on film. Winnie the Pooh meant alot to many people around the world including myself, so any involvement with the character I’m there no matter the outcome.

Most likely the one that will go under people's radar this year is the psychological horror Smile, based on a short film titled Laura hasn’t slept. Unfortunately not getting much attention with its marketing, but it definitely deserves more attention because this is the most nerve-wrecking trailer to be shown this year. From what was shown we follow a doctor who starts to lose her mind and believes she’s being watched by some form of an evil entity after witnessing one of her patients brutally kill herself with a bloody smile to her face. The mystery of the phantom figure haunting this woman is intriguing, but the smile on these victims is what truly is the most dreadful aspect for me, not just one person but everyday people who are all of a sudden unnerving with big sinister smiles who happen to also be stalking her. I know not everyone is a big horror buff in the world, but I’m mostly positive everyone likes a good mystery so at least from what is shown there is enough meat on the bone to make us sink our teeth into. Hopefully there'll be a wide attendance in the auditoriums for its initial September release.

In my eyes the most profound film studio A24 continues to distribute the most demonstrative movies out there and it seems like they have another one on they’re hands with the upcoming dark comedy slasher Bodies Bodies Bodies. With an ensemble cast (Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, and Pete Davidson) we follow a group of friends who host a house party at a remote mansion while a hurricane is occurring, the group then decides to play a game (hence the title) that turns out to be a murder in the dark style game. No matter how old I get I will always see the fun in slasher/body horror, especially ones that don’t take themselves too seriously and this one seems very reminiscent of Scream and Jennifer's body with social satire. It seems that the film will be a study of the digital age and gen-z and how they reflect on certain topics relating to past traditions and the game itself. Any fans of this kind of horror and of A24 should keep an eye out for Bodies Bodies bodies, releasing in August.

Everyone’s favorite masked killer the iconic Michael Myers is returning to theaters for one last kill this October, the final installment in the long running franchise with Halloween ends. The sequel to it’s 2018 and 2021 predecessors, this is the 3rd time the series has reconned the later installments and each time it got to the end of its own cannon run it never quite stuck the landing for fans and myself, but with most fans responding positively to the last 2 films in the new timeline maybe Halloween ends can finally give Myers the final outing he deserves after nearly 40 years on screen. 1978’s Halloween is a timeless classic and has always been a favorite of mine ever since I was first terrified of it as a kid and I’m sure the same can be said for others who had the same effect at a young age. Seeing Myers for one last time is really going to make an impact on those who have been with this character for a long time for better or worse.
