TMNT: THE ARMAGEDDON GAME: THE OPENING MOVES #1 REVIEW

    The
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles summer event series The Armageddon Game, an upcoming eight-part TMNT event series from IDW publishing, has officially begun - well sort of! TMNT: The Armageddon Game: Opening Moves #1, the two issue prequel series, serves as a prologue to the upcoming main story arc. Tom Waltz, who previously penned the first 100 issues of the longest running TMNT series to date, returns to IDW's current continuity with this issue!

SPOILERS BELOW!!

In the wake of TMNT #100, Oroku Saki, better known as The Shredder is still seeking a path to redemption. Since his former Foot Clan brother, Hamato Yoshi (Splinter) selflessly sacrificed his own life to resurrect Saki and reunited him with his immortal witch wife, Kitsune. Saki is "now offered a chance to redeem himself at last for the atrocities he inflicted". The couple are warned that The Rat King, who is also Kitsune's brother, is planning an attack on "everyone" and recruiting his own "trio of terror" in Baxter Stockman, Krang and Madame Null to serve as his pawns. Shredder's redemption arc can only be completed after he fully realizes an opportunity to lead the turtles in Splinter's absence.

As the issue progresses, Kitsune takes The Shredder on a journey through the celestial plane to witness the failures of her brother's "wicked pawns", all in an effort to find potential weaknesses. She does this by showing Saki key memories of their soon to be opponents. General Krang, now in possession of the body of the unwilling Leatherhead, is shown dealing with his own struggles. The mutant, Leatherhead "clings to its few remaining threads of free will" and is actively starving himself in an attempt to eliminate Krang, the parasite within him. Saki is also shown an action packed battle taking place in the cosmos of Dimension X. General Krang uncharacteristically gives the order to his troops to retreat during the fight, showing that Krang is potentially "fearful of the coalition formed against him in his own dimension." The issue concludes with a To Be Continued and Saki and Kitsune hovering down to a government building with Kistsune stating "Mayor Baxter Stockman awaits..."

The Armageddon Game: Opening Moves #2 is due to be released in August!
