Metazoo 250k in Dallas Has Been Confirmed!

Metazoo has announced their first proper in person tournament and it’s even better than expected. There have been some smaller events at previous conventions, but this is their first tournament with a full prize pool. They will be hosting a 250k event at Dallas Fort Worth Collect-A-Con on May 28th and 29th. This event had been largely confirmed for weeks, but details have now been formally announced. The big prize up top is a whopping $101,000 and $20,000 easily in sealed prizing. Even 9th-32nd place receives $1,000 and some Metazoo products. For a first official in person tournament, this is nothing to shake a stick at. To enter, players must have attended a registered in person Metazoo tournament prior. These events are currently limited geographically as many areas don’t have a local scene big enough. However, the motivation of such a large prize pool will surely encourage stores on the fence to try a local event.
Personally, I will be flying to Texas in order to play. Even with such a huge prize pool, I wonder how many players will end up entering. Having a local scene and funds is not a given for everyone. Events like Caster Society’s Seasonal play or large tournaments online have capped out at 40-50 people. That being said, all the top current players are already eagerly making plans to attend. Metazoo’s singles market has been at a loss since it’s inception as the local communities were slowed by Covid and supply chain issues. I can’t think of a better boost to the singles market than a tournament of this level.
With such a large amount of the prizing budget being put into one event, part of me wonders if this is the right move for the game. You could have required only an online qualifier or none at all and increased the field. They could have used the total prize pool for a few events and still had large sums available at each. Overall, I don’t disagree with how they decided to handle this event. I just wonder what the end results will be. In the meantime, I’m excited for the event and what it holds for the community. Multiple top players have already formed teams and this is their chance to make a name for themselves. With the event only two months away, we will soon see what the future of this game holds.
