A poker hand love story: King Queen of Hearts

KQ Hearts-A Perfect Valentine

With Valentine's day coming up, what better love story is there than the King and Queen of hearts....

This is a hand taken from a 2/5 Cash game at Parx Casino in Pennsylvania.  There is a raise to $20 from early position and 2 calls from late position.  The Hero is in the big blind and also makes the call with KQhh.

The flop is Jh 9h 5c.

The Hero checks.  The original raiser bets out $40 and is called.  The player in late position raises to $140 and has approximately $650 behind him.  Our Hero who has about $800 in his stack is in an interesting spot here.  He has a monster draw with the second nut flush draw, 2 overs and a gut shot straight and gut shot straight flush draw for the Royal Flush.

The Hero decides to flat call the $140 figuring that there are still 2 players left to act again behind him.  The other 2 players fold and now the Hero is heads up with the flop raiser.  There is now $402 in the pot.

The turn is the As.

After consideration, the Hero bets $200 into the flop raiser trying to get a feel for where he is.  At this point, the Hero feels that his range consists of 2 pair (most likely J9) or a set (9s or 5s).  The other possibility is the nut flush draw or possibly even Th8h.  By betting here he is possibly getting some better hands to fold and also pretty much setting the price for the river unless of course he is raised.  After squirming in his chair for awhile, the Villain calls making the pot $802.

The (beautiful) Tc hits on the river giving our Hero the nuts (Broadway).

The Hero shoves for his last $445 which has the Villain covered by about $5 or $10.  After a long deliberation, the Villain decides to call and flips up J9 which were top 2 pair on the flop.

The Hero shows his nut straight and scoops a healthy pot!

Obviously the Hero was fortunate to hit the best card in the deck to help win this pot.  If the river was a heart, it would have been interesting to see if the Hero got paid on his river bet.  If the river was a blank, it would have been interesting to see if the Hero would have bet or given up.
